Ten Cocktails to Serve Before Labor Day – The Moscow Mule


Concocted in the early 1940s by a failed vodka distributor and a Sunset Boulevard bar owner looking to unload a few cases of his own unsold ginger beer, this bright, peppery, summer beverage became an instant sensation with the Hollywood crowd. Between 1947 and 1950, due in part to the success of the Mule, Smirnoff vodka sales skyrocketed in the United States!

The Moscow Mule

  • 1 1/2  ounces vodka
  • 4 ounces Reed’s Ginger Beer
  • Lime wedge garnish
  • (some variations include up to an ounce of lime juice and a tsp of sugar syrup)

Fill a glass with ice.  Pour over the vodka (and lime juice and syrup if including) and top off with the ginger beer.

    Some of us spend our lives being cold. So the hot buttered rum sounds super appealing.

    But so does a manhattan. Or a moscow mule. Or any of these.

    Some of us are also lushes.
